Hong Kong Airport opens its first checkout-free convenience store

Hong Kong Airport opens its first checkout-free convenience store

If you've been to the Hong Kong Airport recently, you might have noticed a shiny new convenience store that's not just another 7-Eleven or Circle K. Offering travellers quick and easy access to purchasing travel essentials, Travelwell is the Hong Kong International Airport's first autonomous convenience store.  Located at the Sky Bridge entrance (near Gate 24), the unmanned store has a wide range of products available – including packaged food, drinks, souvenirs, and travel essentials – and uses IoT sensing technology to detect customers' movement routes and automates purchase processes. That means no checkouts, no queues, and no hassle. Photograph: Courtesy Hong Kong International Airport Here's how it works: Before entering the store, customers will need to tap their credit card at the gates for it to open. Once inside, the store's IoT sensing technology will automatically capture each customer's movement route, stopping points, and selected products. When the customer leaves the store, the system will automatically identify the purchased items, record the amount, and deduct it from the pre-bound credit card. Customers can also print out their receipts at the exit gate or make use of the microwave and utensils available outside the store if necessary. In a press conference on Feb 28, government officials announced that Hong Kong will be dropping its mask mandate starting from March 1. The city’s mask wearing measure has been in effect since July 15, 2020, and now after three long years, Hongkongers and those travelling to Hong Kong will no longer be required to wear a mask when out and about around the city. Members of the public who are taking public transport or visiting medical facilities may freely decide if they wish to wear a mask or not.The easing of the rule comes after neighbouring SAR, Macao, lifted its outdoor mask requirement on Monday, February 27.  Recommended storiesHKT and West Kowloon Cultural District Authority present HKT x WestK PopfestHong Kong's Tai Pak Floating Restaurant looks to reopen in 2024Cathay Pacific is giving away 80,000 free flight tickets across Southeast AsiaFollow us on Youtube, Facebook, and Instagram, or subscribe to our newsletter for the latest news and updates on what's going on in the city.

Hong Kong's Tai Pak Floating Restaurant looks to reopen in 2024

In June 2022, the city's iconic tourist attraction, Jumbo Floating Restaurant, left Hong Kong waters and capsized at sea while on its way to Cambodia for storage – a shocking piece of news that saddened many Hongkongers and those who had fond memories of the place. Fortunately, it seems that Tai Pak Floating Restaurant, Jumbo's sister vessel which closed down over 10 years ago, may have some good news for us all! According to local sources, New Bond Limited, which acquired Tai Pak in August last year, recently announced its plans to renovate the boat and reopen by Q3 of 2024. Although there are no further details yet on how this revamp project will be carried out and what it entails, rest assured that we can all see this beautiful vessel come alive once again.
