The best juice bars in Miami for powering up the healthy way

The best juice bars in Miami for powering up the healthy way

May 2019: Miami, like much of the rest of the planet, has yet to get over its love affair with juices. As the trend has matured, though, so have our standards. Today’s juices must be organic, they must be cold-pressed and crucially, they must be delicious. While we’re still mourning the loss of Jugofresh, Miami’s pioneering juice bar chain that made it all the way into Whole Foods stores before abruptly closing all locations in 2018, new options have swooped in across the city to fill the void. The vegan geniuses at Love Life Cafe are slinging killer juices and smoothies at Time Out Market in South Beach, while GreenG Juice Bar in Edgewater offers an array of live shots, juices, nut milks and to-go meals. An old staple we’d be remiss to leave off, Athens Juice Bar in North Miami Beach has been a locals institution since 1942, long before we started tossing things like chlorophyll and probiotics into our beverages. Juice bars come in handy after too many late nights binging on wings, truffle fries and Miami’s best drunk food. Luckily, you’ll find no shortage of juice bars in Miami. It’s just one of the latest health trends to find its footing in the 305. Maybe you recognize its cousin, the acai bowl, from one of your trips to find the best acai bowls in Miami. Or maybe the best desserts in Miami is more your speed. Either way, we could all use a nice fresh juice every occasionally, and here’s where you can find the tastiest and freshest in the city.

The New Schnitzel House

The New Schnitzel House

4 out of 5 stars

Residing in the original Schnitzel Haus, a neighborhood staple that served German comforts in the form of gravy-soaked cutlets, bratwurst and Das Boots, The New Schnitzel House pays homage (obviously), though not without asserting its own zany identity. At the helm of this Bauhaus-meets-Memphis postmodernist dream is Adam Gersten, the man behind Wynwood’s pioneering Gramps Bar. If you’ve been there, you’ll already be familiar with Gersten’s laidback yet meticulous approach to hospitality—and his offbeat but never off-putting tastes. From the vintage sports ephemera and faded matchbooks of long-lost local dives that decorate his bar to the synth battles and rock ‘n’ roll shows he hosts on the patio, patrons of Gramps get the pleasure of experiencing Gersten’s many niche fascinations. At The New Schnitzel House (“The Schnitz” for short), the whole endeavor feels just as personal, just a little more grown up. A small, white box on the edge of the road, The New Schnitzel House offers a friendly reprieve from the unrelenting sun of the 79th Street Causeway. Walk in through the front or back (where you’ll find a covered patio and some dedicated parking spots) to enter a cave-like dining room and bar with booth seating, laminate tabletops, mirrored walls and the requisite 1990s faux ferns. Photograph: Courtesy The New Schnitzel House Servers are helpful and familiar, many of them longtime employees of Gersten’s who honestly just seem happy to be there. On our visit, they guided u

Copal Rooftop Bar

Copal Rooftop Bar

While it’s not quite the towering rooftop you'd find in Brickell or Downtown, this second-floor bar still makes the cut—partly because it’s one of a small handful in trendy Wynwood. Head to the open-air lounge and bar above the recently redeveloped Wynwood Jungle (formerly the Wynwood Arcade) for DJ-spun tunes and a menu of Mexican-inspired snacks and craft cocktails. Technically, it's the rooftop bar to Pez Loco, the downstairs spot that's on our list of Miami's best Mexican restaurants (so you know the mezcal and guac are on point here).

Street Art After Dark

Street Art After Dark

Wynwood Walls hosts a new community program, Street Art After Dark, on the last Friday of every month this summer. Sip cocktails and graze from food carts as you peruse murals and sculptures at the world’s leading street art museum by moonlight, set to the soundtrack of local DJs. You’ll also have the chance to learn how to spray paint at the Street Art Experience and catch special appearances from Wynwood Walls graffiti artists. Each ticket includes a signature welcome cocktail for those of drinking age.

Jacuzzi Boys

Jacuzzi Boys

Miami's stalwart indie-psych rockers Jacuzzi Boys dropped their latest EP, Glue, earlier this summer and promptly set out on a quick Southern tour to test out the new tunes. After making the rounds in Tennessee and Alabama, the band returns home this weekend to Gramps, a Wynwood staple with a sprawling covered patio in case of rain. Expect the three-piece to run through classics along with the newer stuff. The rock 'n' roll kicks off with support from Alabama-based band Snacks.

Walter's Mercado

This new-ish pop-up market in Little River has found itself an indoor home for the summer. Expect a curated roundup of vendors selling vintage clothing, furniture, curios and vinyl along with original art, plants, drinks and snacks. This weekend, sustainable, banana-based soft-serve ice cream cart Peel pops up at the mercado to help you cool down on what will most likely be another hot, humid Miami Saturday. 7401 NW Miami Pl

Dale Zine

Dale Zine

5 out of 5 stars

To be an independent printer and publisher in Miami is to set yourself adrift on the Caribbean during peak hurricane season with no life jacket or provisions. Your chances of survival are, in a word, slim. And yet, local indie print shop and gallery space Dalé Zine has been providing a platform for Miami’s multimedia artists and designers for more than a decade. They haven’t just weathered the storm; Dalé has created their own little island where the water’s warm, the community is friendly and the views are pretty out of this world. Considering their backgrounds in advertising and design, and their passion for propping up Miami’s creative scene, it’s not surprising that Steve Saiz (a senior art director) and Lillian Banderas (a stylist manager) founded Dalé Zine. Back in 2009, the couple created Dalé with one simple goal: to showcase this city’s independent voices in a fun, approachable environment through the “most low-key format ever,” the zine. Typically printed in small, limited batches and with roots in punk subculture, a zine (short for "magazine") is scrappy and DIY with a distinctive point of view. At Dalé, the concept has broadened over the years to become an open cultural hub for the Miami community, with offerings ranging from all-ages zine workshops to an online radio show, pop-up events and most recently a storefront and gallery space in Little River. “We've had great opportunities, from working with Sesame Street to HBO, but we love the moments we get to make

A Casa Mia at Osteria Morini

Osteria Morini Miami's Chef de Cuisine Tommy Levandoski has teamed up with Chef Scott Linquist of COYO Taco for the latest edition of A Casa MIA, an ongoing dinner pop-up series in South Beach. After its first successful takeover by sister restaurant Marea, the Michelin-starred NYC institution, Osteria Morini welcomes Miami Beach local Linquist to create an "Italia con Mexico" mashup. Drawing on Linquist's background at the likes of Serena Rooftop, Como Como, COYO Taco and New York's Dos Caminos, the duo will serve up bold dishes like the Tortellini di Barbacoa, little pockets filled with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, birria brodo onion and Calabrian chile. To help set the mood, the canal-front Italian restaurant will be decked out in sugar skull arrangements by South Beach Farmer and florals by the new neighborhood boutique Pozy!, with live music starting at 7:30pm each night. TUR Kitchen

TUR Kitchen

4 out of 5 stars

Helmed by Michelin-trained Executive Chef Christian Chirino, TUR Kitchen offers a more refined Mediterranean dining experience in Miami, where Med-inspired restaurants have proliferated in recent years. Beautifully plated dishes draw from all over the region: Turkish manti topped with silky labneh and dusted with pistachios; roasted squid with Medjool dates and chorizo, brightened by sliced jalapeño and microgreens; succulent braised leg of lamb spiced with dukkah and served with Turkish ezme salad. Expect to find seasonal dishes here, too—like the stracciatella, made with delicate burrata cream, peach and pistachio, and little textural pops of spice and brine from Spanish chilis and capers—all made from locally or regionally sourced ingredients. Located on Giralda Avenue in bustling downtown Coral Gables, TUR takes a decidedly elegant and subdued approach to its ambiance, complete with white tablecloths, a crystal chandelier and an impressive glass wine case dividing the room—certainly a different vibe from spots like trendy Doya in Wynwood and bohemian Mandolin in Design District. TUR’s not stuffy, though: Friendly waitstaff, plenty of live greenery, outdoor seating and a massive open kitchen ensure the space feels intimate and welcoming. With premium options like caviar service and multi-course cocktail and culinary pairing menus, TUR may not be as outwardly eclectic as some of its contemporaries, but it nonetheless makes a fine spot for a festive celebration or romantic d

New York can officially call itself the pizza capital of the U.S., with 10 venues featured in today’s 50 Top Pizza USA 2023 announcement. But while they’re contending with apocalyptic wildfire smoke and pizza rats, Miami’s down here chilling with year-round beach weather and three of America’s best pizza spots. The annual 50 Top Pizza USA guide unveiled its rankings for the best pizza restaurants in North America during an award ceremony held on June 27 at New York’s Chelsea Market. After NYC, Miami, Portland and San Francisco tied for second-best with three restaurants each on the list. This just in: Floridians really want to GTFO, according to this new study

Florida gets a lot of flack for a lot of different reasons: We’re too hot, too stormy, too weird, too extra, our lawmakers are too loud and our rent is too damn high. But at least one positive story has been repeated over and over the last couple of years: Everyone wants to move to Florida. And it’s true! Not only was Florida the fastest-growing state last year, but it ranked in the top three over the last two years, adding more than 655,000 new residents between 2020 and 2022 (second only to Texas). Despite this fact, people already living in Florida seem to have different thoughts. According to a new study by the moving company SelfStorage.com that analyzed Google search data across the 50 states, Florida ranks #1 as the state most Americans want to relocate from. Though the study doesn’t attempt to get into the “why” of it all, we could venture a few guesses if we had to. The study looked at Google search volume for various keywords such as "haulage," "moving companies," "packing and unpacking services" and "professional movers” in each respective state. “These keywords reflect the intentions and interests of individuals seeking information about moving services and options,” the study says.  Based on that metric, Florida took the lead with a search volume of 152 per 100,000 population, indicating a relatively high level of interest in relocation among Florida residents. Utah closely followed with a search volume of 144 per 100,000 population. Idaho (143 per 100,000) and C

Wynwood Pride celebrates five years with an epic month of programming

For a long time, Miami had politely excused itself from partaking in annual World Pride Month celebrations. By June, the Miami sun is already hot enough to melt off even the most seasoned drag queen’s full face—and who wants to plan a parade in the midst of hurricane season? Besides, New York pretty much has the East Coast covered when it comes to Pride festivities, and April’s Miami Beach Pride is a fun way to kick everything off. At least, this had been the thinking from 1995 until around five years ago, when Wynwood Pride was born. The annual Pride celebration on the mainland stands defiantly in the face of heat waves, tropical storms and gay flight to Fire Island, boldly asserting: We’re here, we’re queer and Miami’s LGBTQ+ community deserves the world—including a proper World Pride celebration alongside everyone else. Photograph: Gabe Marino The year was 2019, and soon-to-be co-founders Jose Atencio, Scott Bernardez and Jor-El Garcia sensed a growing diversity in the Miami scene and a need for more and better spaces to celebrate it. With backgrounds in marketing, design and promotions, the friends pooled their resources to organize and execute the inaugural Wynwood Pride at the Wynwood Marketplace. The concept was to create a more music and performance-driven atmosphere in the heart of Miami’s booming arts district that appealed to different ages and underserved groups. “The core belief was to be a Pride for everyone,” says Liza Santana, Wynwood Pride’s founding spokes

Revealed: The best nude beach in the world is in Miami, new study finds

Not only is Haulover Park among the best places to meet singles in Miami, but the picturesque beach with a famed clothing-optional section was just ranked the number-one nude beach in the world. That’s according to the U.K.-based lingerie and swim brand Pour Moi, whose experts crunched the numbers on the most well-known beaches around the world where nude sunbathing is permitted. The world’s top 100 nude beaches were ranked based on an index score that took into account the number of Google reviews and average Google review scores. The number of annual Google searches per year for the term “nude beach” was cross-referenced with the population size of each country to come up with the shortlist. So, why Haulover? Aside from nearly 500 Google reviews raving about its beauty, accessibility, amenities and frequent patrols that weed out any “creeps,” this nearly half-mile-long stretch of sand draws as many as 7,000 visitors in a single day, according to the park’s website. Though Haulover Nude Beach comprises a small portion of the larger Haulover Beach Park, up to 85% of sunbathers head straight to the nude beach area—so you know this study’s onto something. As for the rest of the list, Praia de Tambaba (João Pessoa, Brazil); Red Beach (Santorini, Greece); Patara Beach (Patara, Turkey), and Playa de Los Muertos (Almería, Spain) round out the top five. In the U.S., San Francisco’s Baker Beach (No. 16), Florida’s Playalinda Beach (No. 20), New Jersey’s Gunnison Beach (No. 21), Texas

Museum of Ice Cream returns to Miami with a permanent home in Downtown

Museum of Ice Cream returns to Miami with a permanent home in Downtown

It feels like a lifetime ago—2017—when the Museum of Ice Cream first melted into the collective consciousness of Miami. Back then, our writer described it as “a playground for the social media generation.” Words like “immersive” and “experiential” were only just beginning to trickle into the mainstream, and the concept of a “pop-up” in Miami didn’t instantly trigger pandemic PTSD, with maybe a twinge of nostalgia. Now, the sold-out and extended experience that first took up residence in the Faena District (following massively successful locations in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco) will return to Miami permanently in early 2024. The new Museum of Ice Cream Miami will live in Downtown’s Miami Worldcenter at 851 NE 1st Avenue (Unit #134). Slated to debut in early 2024, it will span two floors and more than 14,000 square feet along the development’s pedestrian promenade between 1st and 2nd Avenues. Rendering: Courtesy Miami Worldcenter Designed by the MOIC in-house team, the “multi-platform, immersive experience” will also incorporate AI technology to transport guests into a pastel-hued, sprinkle-coated wonderland, “fostering human connection through the shared love of ice cream,” according to the official release.  MOIC visitors will find 10 interactive, Miami-inspired installations, among them the Cream Liner, a luxury airliner experience inspired by the ’60s and ’70s; and The Hall of Freezers, a trippy exploratory room filled with dozens of mysterious refrigerator d

Lionel Messi is coming to Miami

Lionel Messi is coming to Miami

Argentina’s legendary Lionel Messi—widely regarded as one of the greatest players of all time—is gearing up to sign with Major League Soccer's Inter Miami. At least, that’s according to a June 7 Tweet from award-winning sports journalist Guillem Balague. The footie icon has reportedly turned down offers from Saudi Arabia and a return to Barcelona to seal the deal.  After two seasons of playing with France’s Paris Saint-Germain Football Club, and the rest of his career spent with Barcelona, the sought-after, 35-year-old free agent finally comes stateside in what would be a landmark victory for the league. Though it’s less competitive than its European counterpart, MLS is a growing league that likely affords Messi future opportunities for club ownership. Joining Inter Miami also conveniently places the star in South Florida ahead of the U.S.-hosted 2024 Copa America and 2026 World Cup. Plus, Messi’s already got a sweet $9 million apartment at the Porsche Design Tower in Sunny Isles, where his luxury car allegedly has its own elevator.  In 2018, Miami celebrated its very first Major League Soccer team, Inter Miami, delivered by one of the biggest (and most chiseled) faces in the sport: owner David Beckham.
